Why Premature Birth is So Serious and Dangerous?

Premature birth can be defined as a birth of a child before the thirty seven weeks of pregnancy completes and after viability.

Viability can be described as a stage when the fetus is able to survive outside the womb of the mother.

Babies born as early as 23 weeks have survived premature birth, but majority of them have been confronted with a series of health hazards.

Premature birth is known to be extremely dangerous for the child as well as the mother because it involves a departure from the general course of pregnancy. Especially, the babies are subject to an array of health problems ranging from acute neurological issues to death. And the main reason behind is that when babies are born prematurely, they do not get time to develop fully, and thus the organs are unable to function properly.

One of the biggest concerns of premature birth is underdevelopment of lungs in the infants which leads to respiratory problems. Neurological and cardiovascular disorders along with digestive problems are common because of the fact that the internal organs are not developed completely.

Certain birth defects are also known to give way to premature birth. In such cases, the birth defect may be become extremely profound. Due to advancements in medicine, many of the defects can be cured but there are many others also that may become a permanent problem for life long.

Another serious feature of premature birth is low weight. Even if the infant is normal during the birth time, low weight can lead to several health problems at a later stage in life. Weight gain, diabetes, development delays are some of the common problems that are likely to arise.

As mentioned earlier, premature birth is also very dangerous for the mothers also.  They may experience hemorrhage or heavy bleeding. In addition, if caesarean section is performed then the mother has a high risk of development of varied complications and different types of infections during the time of surgery. She may also develop a permanent disorder and serious health problems such as cardiovascular diseases.
